I always hear a popular argument that the universe had to be created by something. It’s too complex and awesome to have just appeared! And for the most part, I agree. Maybe.

My thought experiment on this idea goes in a bit of a circle, so bear with me. I do have a point. Sort of.

I’m not the only one who asks, “If a god created the universe, than what created god?” There are a number of answers you will receive, including: “god has always been”, “something above god”, or the ever popular “I don’t know”. When I hear “god has always been” my next question is “Are you saying that god is not nearly as complex and awesome as the universe he created, the universe you said is too complex and awesome to have not been created by god?” To me it’s a borderline paradox that means that if the universe had to have had a creator, so did the god who created it.

Those still following me might think they know where I am going with this. I obviously think that a god created a god that created our universe. Or, a god created a god that created a god that… you get the picture.

But that would be wrong. This is where I take a sharp turn and wonder: regardless if it was a single god that has always been , or if it was a long chain of gods, there had to be an original creator. If there is in fact a god, the first creator (whether it be one or two or million) had to have come out of nothing. Or somehow managed to create itself.

If the first creator came from nothing, why couldn’t the universe have come from nothing just as easily, or just have always been?
